Origin of Rottweilers

It is believed that the Rottweiler dog descended from the Drover dogs in Rome. These dogs were the typical working dogs, high guarding instinct and very intelligent. The transition from the Drover dog to the rottweiler happened when the Roman emperors decided to conquer Europe. The dogs were used to keep their herds intact and to guard their supplies at night. The Romans moved across the Alps to Southern Germany, Arae Flaviae, taking over the city. They remained here and continued trading cattle hence the further need for dogs.

A new town was built named Rottweil. The town dominated in culture and trade increasing its fame and wealth. The dogs provided much needed security and as butchers herded more cattle to and from the markets, more dogs were needed for herding cattle. The use of the dogs were high until the invention of rail roads and donkeys for carting, however from about 1901-1907 they started being used as police dogs.

The first club established was the DRK - Deutscher Rottweiler Klub in January 1907 which later became the IRK - International Rottweiler Klub. It was then that the Rottweiler standard was set.

Today there are various national and international rottweiler clubs. The dogs are still used in the security business, as companions and working dogs.
